Navy's N-sub INS Aridhaman loaded with lethal features as India eyes underwater prowess

New Delhi: India will soon launch its second indigenously-built nuclear submarine INS Aridhaman to boost its underwater fighting prowess.

The new vessel, being built at the Ship Building Centre in Visakhapatnam, is loaded with numerous advanced features.

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman is likely to launch the new submarine later this month, and then it will undergo extensive trials before its induction into service, the New India Express reported.

Since submarines are hard to detect, they enable a country to retain a second-strike capability in case of a first-nuclear strike.

“By virtue of its stealth and attendant survivability of second-strike capability, a nuclear submarine is particularly suited for nuclear deterrence,” the government noted in a 2009 report.

With the launch of the home-made submarines, India has joined elite group of five other countries - the permanent members of the UN Security Council – which operate indigenously-built nuclear vessels.

Gorakhpur: Yogi Adityanath hits out at previous UP governments, says they are responsible for BRD hospital tragedy

New Delhi: Hitting out at Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday said that he won’t let Gorakhpur turn into a picnic spot.

"Delhi mein baitha koi yuvraj swachhta abhiyan ka mahatv nahi jaanega. Gorakhpur unke liye picnic spot bane uski ijazat nahi deni chahiye. (There's a 'yuvraj' sitting in Delhi, who doesn't understand the significance of a Swachhta Abhiyan.. He should not be permitted to turn Gorakhpur into his picnic spot)," the UP CM attacked congress vice-president while addressing a gathering after launching the 'Swachh Uttar Pradesh, Swasth Uttar Pradesh' campaign which will continue till August 25.

Yogi Adityanath asserted that the governments in last 12-15 yrs ruined institutions in the state for selfish motives by institutionalizing corruption. They kept people deprived of facilities.

"I started the movement against Encephalitis. Unhygienic conditions and pollution are the main causes of the disease. When it comes to it prevention is better than cure and it starts with sanitation. Polluted water also causes fever and other diseases," the CM stated in the backdrop of recent deaths of children.

Australian state prepares for drought after driest June

Melbourne: The Victorian government in Australia is preparing to enter into drought after an unusually dry winter, it was revealed on Wednesday.

According to a new threshold introduced by Premier Daniel Andrews, Victoria begins preparations for drought when dams sink to 60 per cent full, compared to the previous threshold of 54.1 per cent, Xinhua news agency reported.

"It guarantees we have a rainfall-independent, large-scale water supply to support catchments, our communities and water-dependent industries."

The desalination plant is capable of producing 150 gigaliters of clean water every year, though plans to increase its capacity to 200 gigaliters have been flagged.

The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) said the dry period was likely to continue in the spring.

"Following the very dry conditions in June and modest rainfall this month, soil moisture is below average across much of the state, and most notably in the catchment regions to the east," a BOM spokesperson said.

"In general, the recent conditions and outlook are consistent with lower flows into dams in the coming two months," he said.
